The Poem: A Rip Tide
Life rises like a wave
and acts like the ocean:
Just a moment to turn up over,
water fighting itself.
A violent surface of screaming foam
you’re tumbled like a stone,
dragged to the sea floor.
Just a moment to wonder
about drowning,
(half a moment to pray
that you do).
Beneath opaque churning
a clear, cold blue holds you
with unfathomable depth.
Just a moment for stillness
to find you,
for the body to move,
to rise again to the surface.
The next wave comes,
bringing you onto shore,
skin stained with salt
air filling you from the inside out.
