A poem about identity and change, building and breaking.

The Artwork: Change

The Poem: Every Day, We Change

Don’t ask me
My favorite color, book, place
or poem

One day,
my thoughts are green
the next,
I must swallow the yellow
swell my solar plexus and become the sun.

Every day
we change.

Every day
we build
a self
and hold it up
with both hands.

Yesterday I was a tumble of soft, pink blossoms,
a rainbow with clear-cut edges,
Today I’m shedding brown leaves
While my monsoon heart rages blue

Every day
we lose
what we thought
was ours
forever.

Every moment
the whole transforms,
creating and collapsing.

Move through it.
Let it crack you open,
let it fill you with
that flash of color
so brilliant
it aches.

Every day
our hearts break & we die

Every day
we live & let love in again
