The Poem: Here is what to do when you don’t know what to do

Here is what to do
when you are a neon sign
flashing BIG FEELINGS:

Find the space

whether erratic or ecstatic,

in between flickers

whether stuck in prolonged darkness
or fearing fading phosphorescence

and open to it.

. . .

Here is what to do
when you are a bird
unable to fly:

Find your perch

whether born into a cage

stretch your wings

or captured and clipped by time

feel the air where you are.

…

Here is what to do
when you are a whirling dervish
of a heart:

See the two step

whether spinning in a silent room,

hear the song

or shuffling sunrise and sunset in your hands
like a clown who has forgotten how to juggle

relax your hands.

…

Here is what to do
when you are a wishing well
under a microscope:

Back up

whether overfull with requests,

back up

or teeming with disappointment

back up.

…

Here is what to do
when you are the moon
dragging your tides ragged:

Be the gravity

whether tossed stupid by love,

inhabit the pull

or submerged by loss

feel the recurrence of currents.

…

Here is what to do
when you don’t know what to do:

Whisper to the wondering waves,
This, too, belongs.
